The majority of household-related services are performed illegally without being reported to the tax office. Many people are unaware that the government has created very favourable conditions for mini-jobs. Undeclared work literally does not pay off. Below, we have compiled the advantages of a proper mini-job for you.
1. Accident insurance
The majority of accidents happen in the home. When cleaning, a momentary lapse in concentration can have serious consequences. This also applies from a financial perspective. This is because the medical staff treating you must register the accident with the accident insurance company. If your work was not properly registered as a household-related service, the accident insurance company will withdraw and pass on the treatment costs to the client. In addition, there will also be a fine from the tax office. With a mini-job, on the other hand, you are covered by accident insurance not only at work, but also on your way to and from work. Don't take unnecessary risks.
2. The employment contract
The prerequisite for proper registration should be the employment contract. In this contract, both sides protect themselves and clarify what is expected of each other. It sets out your obligations as an employee – e.g. the tasks you are expected to perform – as well as the obligations of your employer. If, for example, you are assigned tasks that were not agreed upon, you can refuse to perform them and refer to the employment contract. In the event of a dispute, you will not be able to assert your interests without an employment contract and regular employment. Here, too, you are taking an unnecessary risk if you do not insist on registering with the mini-job centre.
3. Minimum wage, continued payment of remuneration, holiday entitlement
If you enter into an employment relationship, you are entitled to all the usual employee rights. This means you are entitled to continued payment of remuneration in the event of illness, four weeks' holiday and the minimum wage of € 13.90 (from January 2026). Do not waive your rights. Your employer will not be left to bear the costs in the event of illness, as 80% of these costs are covered by the Minijobzentrale. In addition, employers can deduct up to € 510 of their expenses for the mini-job per year from their taxes.
4. Favourable conditions for pension entitlements
As part of a mini-job, you can benefit from particularly favourable conditions of around 14% of your income. Please enquire about this with your pension insurance provider. Explain to your potential employer that it is in the interests of both parties to conclude an employment contract, to protect themselves legally against accidents and risks, and that, given the financial incentives and favourable conditions available, it literally does not pay to employ people illegally.
