Can I claim domestic help through my care insurance fund?

Whether the costs for domestic help can be covered in full or in part depends on your personal situation. In principle, there are options for coverage by care insurance, especially if you have a recognised care level.

Please note: We cannot provide any legally binding information. The following information is for guidance only and does not replace advice from your care insurance fund or a specialist agency.

Care level as a prerequisite

As a rule, a recognised care level (1 to 5) is required for costs to be covered. People with a care level are entitled to care insurance benefits, which are administered by the responsible care insurance fund. Depending on the individual case, these benefits also include household support, e.g. through domestic help.

Use the relief amount

People in need of care with a care level are entitled to the so-called relief amount. This amounts to 131 euros per month (as of 1 January 2025) and can be used for household-related services, everyday assistance or care. The service must be provided by a provider recognised under state law. Please clarify directly with the domestic help or your care insurance fund whether a domestic help found via Putzperle.de meets these requirements.

Please note: Private domestic helpers are generally not recognised under state law and therefore cannot be billed via the relief amount. We therefore recommend that you specifically search for self-employed domestic helpers or cleaning companies. They are often more knowledgeable about billing options and may meet the necessary requirements.

Billing via the relief amount

The relief amount is earmarked and is only paid retroactively. This means that you must first submit an invoice in order to receive a refund. Alternatively, some care insurance funds offer the option of a declaration of assignment. In this case, the domestic help settles the bill directly with the care insurance fund, so that you do not have to pay in advance. Whether this is possible depends on both the care insurance fund and the respective provider.

Our tip

Talk to your care insurance fund in advance to find out whether and how billing is possible in your individual case and what requirements must be met. Also, ask the domestic help/housekeeping service you want to use whether they are recognised as a provider of everyday relief under state law.
