In which case may a domestic helper work on account?

In Germany, there are several ways in which a domestic helper can legally work on account. Here are some cases where this may be possible:

  1. Self-employed domestic help: a domestic helper can operate as an independent contractor and offer her services on account. In this case, she must register a business and is responsible for paying taxes and social security contributions herself.
  2. Employment as a mini-job: If the domestic helper works regularly and permanently in a private household, she can be employed as a mini-jobber. In this case, she may not earn more than 538.- euros per month. The employer must pay the flat-rate social security contributions and the domestic helper may submit an invoice for the hours she has worked.
